What is Domain Expiry?

Every domain registration has an end date. When that date passes without renewal, your domain expires. An expired domain stops resolving i.e. visitors can no longer reach websites, funnels, or pages connected to it.

Expiry does not mean your domain is immediately gone. You have a structured window to act before the domain is permanently released. Below shown is an image of a typical domain lifecycle (may differ for some domains).

What is Domain Renewal?

Renewal extends your domain registration for one or more years. You can renew before expiry or within a grace period after expiry. The standard renewal fee applies during this window. The platform supports auto-renew, which attempts renewal before your expiry date. You can also renew manually from your Advanced Settings page at any time.

Grace Period

When a domain expires, it enters the Grace Period. For most domains, this period extends up to 40 days. During this time, you can renew the domain at the standard renewal price with no additional charges.

Also, during the grace period:

  • Your domain may stop resolving to connected products

  • You retain full ownership of the domain

  • Only the standard annual renewal fee applies

  • Note for .ai domains: A minimum 2-year renewal is required. The renewal fee reflects the 2-year term.

If you do not renew by the end of the grace period, your domain moves into the Redemption Period for domain recovery.

What is Domain Recovery?

After the grace period ends, standard renewal is no longer possible. If your domain has passed the grace period, you must recover it within the redemption period which typically lasts 30 days. This action is called domain recovery.

Redemption Period

The Redemption Period is the industry-standard term for the recovery window once the grace period ends. During this period, the domain is held by the registry and is no longer in a standard renewal state.

Recovery requires two charges:

  • Standard renewal fee: the regular annual cost to extend your registration

  • Redemption fee:  a one-time fee charged by the domain registry, confirmed at time of recovery

Both fees are shown before you confirm. Both are required to complete recovery.

The redemption fee is set by the registry, not the platform. It applies universally across all major registrars.

What is Domain Release?

After the redemption period ends, the domain is queued for deletion and is permanently deleted within the next five days. Once released, the domain becomes publicly available for anyone to register.
